Sunday was not an ideal situation for the Tampa Bay Rays. In the midst of their best season ever the pitcher (Matt Garza) and the catcher (Dioner Navarro) got into a fight and the team lost to the Texas Rangers 6-3. The fight unfortunately got most of the attention for the Rays, who fell to 37-26 on the year.
Garza started for the Rays and allowed three runs over four innings to drop his record to 4-3. During a visit to the mound, Navarro and Garza were screaming at each other and getting right in each other’s faces. The confrontation continued in the dugout and the two needed to be separated. Jason Hammel relieved Garza and allowed three more runs over 3.1 innings.
On the offensive side of the things the Rays were led by Iwamura and Navarro who each collected a pair of hits. BJ Upton drove in two with a two run home run in the sixth inning to help bring the Rays back into the ball game. Eric Hinske hit clean up for the Rays but went 0-3 with a pair of K’s before getting ejected for arguing balls and strikes.
The Rays will look to get back on the winning track on Monday night against the Los Angeles Angel. The series will take place in California so the game on Monday will not start until 10:05pm. Edwin Jackson will start the opener for the Rays.
