The Skinny: They are still off to their best start ever, but the Rays got a reality check this weekend against the Boston Red Sox. The Rays fell in their final game of their series against the Red Sox by a score of 7-3. The sweep at the hands of Boston left the Rays at 16-15 on the season.
The Pitching: Even though they lost the game, the Rays got some good news today: Scott Kazmir is back in the Rays rotation. Kazmir was handed the loss today in his first start of the year as he is returning from the disabled list. He went only four innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits and three walks. The powerful lefty did rack up five strikeouts.
The Hitting: Trailing 4-0 in the sixth inning, Carlos Pena hit a solo home run to close the gap to 4-1. The Rays got RBIs in the seventh inning from Akinori Iwamura and Carl Crawford to put their final two runs on the board. Iwamura and Jason Bartlett each had two hits for the Rays. While Carlos Pena did homer, he struck out in his three other plate appearances.
What’s Next?: The Rays have a day off for travel tomorrow as they head to Toronto. On Tuesday the Rays will start a three game series against the Blue Jays. Andy Sonnanstine will start the game on Tuesday.
