This one went down to the wire. After a blow out win on Friday, the Tampa Bay Rays had to work a little bit harder to win on Saturday. The Rays held on for a 5-4 win against the Texas Rangers and improved to 37-25 on the season.
Andy Sonnanstine started for the Rays but did not factor in the decision. Sonnanstine threw only five innings but gave up only two runs to help keep the Rays in the ball game. Sonnanstine walked only one batter while striking out three. JP Howell came on after Sonnanstine and threw the sixth and seventh innings. He got the win and improved to 5-0 on the season. Dan Wheeler came on to close the game and gave up a run in the 9th to make things interesting before picking up his second save of the season.
The Rays led the entire game, never giving up the lead, but every time they increased it, the Rangers came charging back. Luckily, they put up enough runs to win the game. BJ Upton led the Rays offensive charge with two hits and two walks, he also scored a run. With the game tied at two in the top of the 8th, Willy Aybar smacked a two run double to put the Rays up for good.
The Rays and Rangers will finish their three game series tonight as the Rays look to sweep the series. Matt Garza will start the game. Game time is 5:05pm.
